Porsche CFO Suggests Combustion Engines Might Outlive EU’s 2035 Ban

“Right, so here’s a bit of news that’ll make the green brigade spit out their muesli: Porsche’s top money man, Lutz Meschke, reckons those rumbling combustion engines might just stick around a bit longer than we thought in the EU. While unveiling the new all-electric Macan in Singapore, Meschke casually suggested that the EU’s planned 2035 ban on new combustion engine cars might not be as set in stone as we’ve been led to believe.

Apparently, there’s a loophole big enough to drive a Taycan through. The ban is on cars that belch out emissions, right? But what if the engines are running on hydrogen or those fancy synthetic fuels that are all the rage in the labs? Reuters had a sniff around last March and found out the European Commission might just let these clean-burning ICE cars slide past the ban.

And Porsche? They’re already betting big on electric, expecting more than 80% of their cars being EVs by the end of the decade. But here’s the kicker: in Europe, the old Macan, the one with the petrol engine, is being put out to pasture earlier than expected. Not because of emissions, mind you, but because of some new cybersecurity laws. So, the new electric Macan steps in, but with a price tag that’ll make your wallet wince.

Meanwhile, over in the land of the free, Lincoln’s getting a bit of a trim, cutting down a hundred dealers. It’s like they’re trying to make their showrooms as exclusive as a speakeasy during Prohibition. Guess they’re banking on their cars being so good, they sell themselves without needing a dealer on every corner.

This is the world we’re motoring into, folks: electric cars with eye-watering price tags and fewer places to buy your luxury motors. Makes you wonder, doesn’t it?”
